Side Hustles · Licensed and credentialed work

Commercial drone services

Aerial photography, roof and infrastructure inspection, mapping and construction progress documentation, flown under a commercial certificate.

Earned income Capital $$Passive score 1 — Stops when you stop
Capital needed $$ Aircraft, spare batteries, controller, insurance and the certificate exam. Mapping software adds a subscription.
Time to first payment A month or two The first payment, not the first profit, and no guide to its size
Passive score 1 / 5 Stops when you stop. You are paid for hours or for jobs completed.

The three figures above are this site's editorial assessment of the work, not a survey and not a forecast. Capital is a band describing what has to be bought before anyone pays you; the time is to a first payment rather than to a profit, and says nothing about its size; the passive score is a 1-to-5 description of what happens to the income if you stop for a month. There is no earnings figure on this page, on purpose — a credible one would need a dated geography, a revenue range and a cost breakdown that no honest public source gives.

Effort: Flight days plus substantially more processing time than flying time.

How it works

The sequence people who run this actually follow.

  1. Pass the FAA Part 107 knowledge test and obtain a remote pilot certificate before flying commercially in the US.
  2. Register the aircraft and comply with remote identification requirements.
  3. Choose a service — real estate media, roof inspection, mapping, progress documentation — and learn its deliverable standard.
  4. Check airspace and obtain authorisation where required before every job.

How you get paid

Per job, quoted from flight time plus processing and deliverables; recurring construction documentation is contracted monthly.

Read the three lists below together rather than separately. The first is what has to exist before a first customer, the second is money that keeps going out whether or not anyone buys, and the third is how this work usually stops paying. A hustle looks cheap when only the first list is read, and looks impossible when only the third is — the useful question is whether the running costs and the failure modes are ones you can live with month after month.

What you need first

  • FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate, kept current
  • Registered aircraft and remote ID compliance
  • Liability insurance, which clients increasingly require
  • Processing software for maps and models

What it costs

  • Aircraft, batteries and replacement after crashes
  • Certificate, currency requirements and insurance
  • Processing software subscriptions
  • Travel and weather delays

What makes it fail

  • Flying commercially without the certificate — the penalties are federal
  • Airspace violations near airports and restricted areas
  • A crash into property or a person
  • Competing with real estate agents who bought their own drone

What follows describes how this kind of work is treated under US federal rules. Money reaches you untaxed and unwithheld, so what a platform pays out is not what you keep: self-employment tax sits on top of income tax, expenses come off before either, and state and city rules sit on top of all of it. It is a description of the rules, not tax advice for your situation.

How it is taxed (US)
Schedule C self-employment income with self-employment tax. Business clients issue 1099-NEC. Aircraft and software are generally deductible with depreciation rules on the equipment. Quarterly estimated payments usually apply. Description, not tax advice.

Turning it into an asset

What would have to be true for this to keep paying without you.

This section is the difference between a job you own and an asset. It is not a growth plan and not a promise that the conversion works — it is the list of things that would have to become true before the income survives you, and each one is a different piece of work from the one described above.

Recurring inspection and documentation contracts with several certificated pilots is the transferable form. One pilot with one aircraft is a day-rate job.

The general version of this is on the section page: systems written down, someone other than you doing the work, revenue that recurs by contract, customers who belong to the business, and books a stranger could believe. Until those exist, this is earned income — see the six-mechanism course for how it differs from the income the rest of this site covers.

What can go wrong across all of these
Nothing on this page is a source of reliable income. Side-hustle income is earned income with no floor: platform work can be deactivated without appeal, gig rates and commission structures are changed unilaterally, search and recommendation algorithms rewrite demand overnight, and a single injury ends the physical trades immediately. Several of these carry real liability — a rented tool that hurts someone, a vehicle damaged in your care, a client's property broken, a licensed job done outside your licence — and personal insurance policies routinely exclude commercial use, which is discovered at the moment of the claim. Money usually goes out before any comes in, and the equipment, inventory and licence do not become cheaper if the work does not appear. Finally, this is the corner of the internet with the highest density of paid courses, coaching programmes and 'done for you' systems sold to people who have not yet earned anything: any opportunity that requires an upfront fee to access work deserves more scepticism than a stock does.
